Winning Bid: £190.00

Proxy Bidding, Also known as Commission Bidding is a concept in which the system automatically bids on your behalf up to the maximum bid amount that you have chosen (“Max Bid”).

Your leading bid will be placed from your max bid, at one increment above the competing bid, thus keeping you in the top position until your “Max Bid” is reached. The driver of the “Max Bid” is bids from other bidders.

This is simply to make the online auction process much easier and less time-consuming. Proxy Bid is the Maximum Bid and not the Current Bid.

  • If auction price is between 0 and 750 the bid increment is 10
  • If auction price is between 750 and 1500 the bid increment is 25
  • If auction price is between 1500 and 2500 the bid increment is 50
  • If auction price is over 2500 the bid increment is 100

Herbie Thorpe of Thorpe Thoroughbred Lofts

Sale # 1 2023

Like many boys growing up in 1970’s Dublin, Herbie Thorpe had a natural affinity with animals, in particular, horses and pigeons. His affinity with horses is easily explained; his father Bert was a jockey. His natural abilities with pigeons, however, are less easily explained.

Herbie started out like most, entering the sport with a few gifts from friends and acquaintances. He knew almost immediately that this would be a passion he would keep for the rest of his life. That passion has indeed stayed and subsequently grown to such a level that he is now earning a living for himself and his family from the pigeons, both from his thriving corn store and his stud of superb sprint birds.

For many people looking at Herbie’s career in pigeons, they will say that his greatest achievement was winning the INFC Kings Cup Grand National 2015 with a homebred hen, BERT’s GIRL, with the fastest winning velocity in the history of the race (a record that stands to this day). Herbie would agree that was his greatest race result and a day he and his family will never forget. However, Herbie loves birds that perform regularly with top results. This is even more important in a federation like the Irish South Road Federation (ISRF), probably the most competitive racing organization in Europe today, with convoys regularly hitting 10,000 birds, all sprint racing into the greater Dublin area. An entry of approximately 600 members, all restricted to a maximum entry of 50 birds per race, racing into an area of approximately 120 sq kms.

Winning the champion young bird in the ISRF is a testament to both the breeder and the racer. In the last 4 years, Herbie has bred the champion young bird twice. The first was Sheldon in 2020, and then Haaland in 2022. Both birds are exceptional, and both share the same mother, Odetta. As far as research is possible, Herbie has not heard of any other hen that has bred 2 champion young birds. In addition to winning champion young bird twice, Herbie has also finished 2nd twice, and it is with a daughter of Sheldon and Near Miss, 2nd champion young bird 2018, that we open the sale.

To produce birds capable of being consistently up with the winners (ISRF only awards points to birds in the first 100 places), requires superb breeding stock. Herbie Thorpe owns some of the very best Van Den Bulck pigeons anywhere in Europe. They are a working family of birds producing racers, not just a stud churning out birds for others to race. He also has top birds from Stefaan Lambrechts, Leo Hermans, Patrick Boeckx (children of Sagan), Andre Roodhoft including children of Tom and the dam of Lady Shyne winner of 1st Nat Bourges against 8,000+ birds. All of these birds have been acquired by Herbie through good personal friendships with these outstanding fanciers over many years.

A very small example of notable birds that Herbie has at stud include:

  • Karl, son of Kittel (DNA certified), sire of Haaland ISRF Champion young bird 2022, Luke 1st Open ISRF Skibbereen 2020, G/sire 1st INFC Skibbereen 2019 2,035 birds, 2nd Wild Atlantic Way OLR 2019 winning 15,000 euros, 1st open ISRF Skibbereen 2,333 birds, Joy 1st Castletown 11,099 birds 2021, Kojak IHU southern Region champion Young Bird 2022, G/g/sire of 1st ISRF Castletown 5,360 birds 2022, 1st ISRF Castletown 3,491 birds 2022, and many more.
